Understanding the benefits of using network data management protocol

Before the use of the network data management protocol, for managing data between the networks, the storage device drivers where used by the network file servers. These storage drivers were written for the ordinary computers that you use in the network. It was difficult to back up the file servers in the network. They had to mount the file system to the destination server across the network and then do the back up. This resulted in consuming high bandwidth across the network.

With the network data management protocol in place, it was easy to backup. You should know, for backup, you need some software that helps to backup, and software that controls the source system and the destination system. The network data management protocol has interfaces that help you to control all of these components.

With such control over the components, a manufacturer can focus on the component that is related to its products. The network data management protocol works in the client / server paradigm. The data sources used are considered as the servers or the data service providers. The clients which are also called the data management applications back up the data to the destination point. Each client would work in a single network data management protocol session.

In the network data management protocol, it was allowed to have only one transaction, i.e., one stream for backup. That was how the original protocol was designed. Now with the latest versions of the protocol there is an intermediate component called the translate service which sits between the source and the destination so that multiple streams of data can be transmitted. This allows for greater efficiency in backup. It can consume data from multiple sources in an instant.

A TCP/IP connection is always there between the source and the destination in an network data management protocol session. With this it is clear that the communication is done via the TCP/ IP port. The services between the source and the destination undergoes different states like ‘idle’, ‘listen’, ‘active’ and ‘halted’.
