Understanding database management

Every organization has a lot of data that are critical to their business. Managing this data is important for the success of their business. Such management of data is possible only when the data is properly organized in a database. Management of that data base by the database administrators is called data base management.

There are systems that scan the paper documents and put them into the database so that they can be retrieved whenever necessary. Such databases are managed easily only with the help of the database management systems commonly referred to as DBMS. Special language called the Structured Query Language (SQL) is used to interact with the database. Using this query language the data in the database can be edited, updated, deleted and backed up. The DBMS has lots of functions that can be used by the database administrators to manage the data.

The DBMS takes care of the requests that come to it from different users in the network. It is possible to restrict certain users from accessing the database or certain tables. The administrator has to configure the database by giving the rights needed for accessing the database. Removing the duplicate values from the database and normalizing the database for optimal performance are some of the tasks that are important for the database administrator. Performance tuning is one of the important tasks that are done by the administrator. For fast searching of the database certain columns in the tables are indexed.

One of the routine and important tasks that are done by the database administrator is the backup of database. The data in the database need to be taken back-up so that they can be restored in case of database crash. This is very important as the data cannot be created once it is gone. The data that is accumulated in the database is through hard work and over a period of time.

You can’t let go off that data just like that. So it is important to take back-up of that data. The business cannot be run without those data. Back up of data can be done periodically and can be schedule automatically without monitoring. Back up can be taken in remote servers, or other hard drives in the network. It is also taken in removable media like portable hard disks, CDs and DVDs.
