Understanding different types of database management systems

A database management system has more than just storing and retrieving data. You should know about the different types of database management systems to know more than storing and retrieving data from the database. Getting to know more about the different types of database helps you to find out what you get from a database management system when you go for it.

Database management systems have undergone lots of changes from the days it was created. The earliest type of database that was created was Hierarchical type of database. It assumed a parent child relationship between data. This hierarchical relationship was forced on it to do good programming.

In reality it is not so. Then the Network type of database came to existence. This type allowed for complex structures. The term network indicates the relationship between different data elements. It has nothing to do with the computer network. This system was very efficient although it was not a flexible one.

The other type of database management system is Relational Database Management System. There are many advantages of relational database management systems. Lots of third party tools for management and for reporting are available with this database management system.

The database itself can be distributed type and processing can also be distributed. The management tools for this type of database are well developed to the extent that automatic logging and recovery is also possible. Data consistency is maintained through referential integrity and transactions are secure and complete with the transactional integrity in it.

Nested systems like the PICK system had some advantages over the other earlier systems. This database supports multiple values in a field. Earlier it was not so. Only recently Oracle has implemented such feature. Imagine that the PICK system was far ahead in this area than Oracle earlier. There were limitations in the field characters but the Nested type of database had no restrictions on it.

Object Oriented Database Management Systems is the other type that allows object oriented programming in it with the programming languages and entities are considered as objects as in the object oriented programming. All the features of object oriented programming are available in this type of database.
