Effective Data Management Strategies For Your Organization

Even a medium scale organization would have lot of data to be managed if they are few years in business. Managing all these data is by default more complex. If there is good data management strategies to handle these data then the organization might be losing some valuable information and this might not even come to notice.

Not all data are important in an organization. Some of them will lose their importance after a certain period of time. It is not wise to have all these inactive data in your server which occupies space and slows down the system. A data management strategy to move such data to slower storage devices would cut the down the cost incurred to some extent. It is expensive to hold data in hard disk drives when compared to slower devices like magnetic tape and optical discs. So after a certain period of time data can be moved to such devices. If accessed by any user they can be moved back to hard disk. The user will not notice any slowdown in performance as these data are not accessed frequently.

Data in your organization should be classified according to the importance in your business. Strategies for classification and maintaining data quality should be available in the organization. In large organizations it is difficult to maintain data in a single server. In such cases distributed databases are used. The physical location will be spread by logically they will be integrated. Data from different servers has to be synchronized properly so that at any instant all the data are same in the servers. For this data replication is used. Special software will find the difference in the data in the servers and update them.

It is not sufficient to manage just data, but metadata should also be maintained. Metadata is the information about the data itself. Information like when the data was accessed, by whom, who altered the data etc is called metadata. Data management strategies for managing metadata should also be there. Apart from all these the data management strategies should include XML data management, integrating unstructured and structured data, data security, master data management, data modeling tools and techniques and data services.
